Perugia is an amazing city, with its centro storico at the top of a hill. We took a bus from the train station and got dropped off somewhere (we had no idea where, we just followed all the people getting off) up the hill, but not all the way up. An english speaking gentleman indicated that from here we could take the escalator all the way to the top (to the Centro Storico - main part of Perugia). The moving stairs are a series of connected escalators built inside stone buildings? I can't begin to describe it. Brick ceilings. Dark walls. Paths (street names are set into the stone--could these actually have been streets?) move off into the almost darkness with signs indicating a restaurant or a cafe bar--bricks everywhere, high arched ceilings. It feels like something out of a Harry Potter movie. When we came out of the moving stairs section (we had come up maybe five long escalators?) we were at the top of the city. Lots of different languages spoken. Umbria Jazz was setting up in the main piazza. We ducked into a cafe bar that seemed to have lots of people going in and out. Chocolate cake desserts in the window lured us in. We ate panini (sandwiches) and cappuccini and checked out the beautiful chocolates.
ok. Those horrible bug bites I was complaining about? Max started to get them on Thursday, July 12. By Saturday morning he was covered with the same "bites" that I had--mine were slowly going away. I finally figure out something was wrong...got a clue and took him to the doctor's--chicken pox. The doctor in Italy almost laughed when we said he had been immunized in the U.S. She said she didn't believe there was an immunization and that there were MANY different strains. More later...
